A Great Management Lesson, A Story of Appreciation

What makes a good manager? Is knowing how to appreciate the work of subordinates and of other people a mark of a good manager? What is appreciation?

This is a powerful message in our modern society. We seemed to have lost our bearing & our sense of direction.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview; the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the Curriculum Vitae that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” the youth answered “none”.

The director asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.”

The director asked, “Where did your mother work?” The youth answered, “My mother worked as clothes cleaner.”

The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” The youth answered, “Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books.” Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.”

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother’s hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director’s office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth’s eyes, asked: “Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?”

The youth answered, “I cleaned my mother’s hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes’

The Director asked, “please tell me your feelings.”

The youth said,

Number 1: I know now what appreciation is. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today.

Number 2: By working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.

Number 3: I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, “This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.”

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company’s performance improved tremendously.

Epilogue:

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop “entitlement mentality” and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent’s efforts.

When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others.

For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?

Lessons:

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters.

It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person.

The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

Kung papipiliin ka, alin sa kanila ang mas gugustuhin mong maging kalalagayan mo? Sa sampung kabataan na malimit tumatambay sa tapat ng bahay namin, anim sa kanila ay out-of-school; ang mga dahilan, dahil marami silang magkakapatid, una-una lang ang pagpasok sa paaralan para may makatapos, dahil kailangan nang magtrabaho, dahil walang pantustos ang magulang sa pag-aaral ng anak, o dahil ayaw nang mag-aral.

Malimit elementarya lang ang natatapos ng marami. Kung kaya na palang magtrabaho ng ilang kabataan, sana ay hindi para buhayin ang pamilya kundi para tustusan ang sariling pag-aaral. Hanggang saan ba ang pagsisikap ng mga magulang na itaguyod ang pag-aaral ng mga anak? Hanggang elementarya nga lang ba ay sapat na para makakuha ng disenteng trabaho?

Bakit hindi high school diploma ang mithiin ng isang kabataan? Gaano kahalaga ito?

“Environmental Science Education” as Curriculum

Background and Rationale

The modern Western education system which has successfully replaced indigenous forms of education throughout the world prepares students almost exclusively for an urban existence and dependence on fossil fuel and global trade. Children are taught from an early age how best to compete. But they are not taught how best to live in a truly sustainable society (David Orr, The Ecologist, May 1999). A very significant finding of a great conservationist that the south (third world and developing countries) always looking up to the north (western) and pattern their education development which do not consider sustainable development goals.

This is also stated by Roy, (1984) and Jain,(1995) that education is oriented to meet the needs of the urban middle-class. The curriculum has an urban bias and prepares students for government and professional employment-sectors that have gross unemployment. This conspires to undermine the learning experience of rural children and disassociate them from the traditional learning patterns of their environment. They further said that children become ‘drop-outs, pull-outs, or stay-outs. If we add to this, we see that there are enormous huddles for those who are aiming for Educational for All.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor, addressed the participants of the 1993 Education For All (EFA) Summit with the following statement:

Education is the only effective and humane means for checking rapid population growth. The population of our countries today is greater than was the world's population in 1950. Every hour 10,000 people are added to the global population, 250,000 per day, 100 million per year. The finite space and resources of planet earth cannot continue to sustain such exponential growth. If we do not invest all our resources of energy and will in education, the race with catastrophe will be lost and the balance between man and nature will be re-established by disasters that are not only unthinkable but also avoidable. The choice is ours, and the time for action is now. This is what the mathematics of population and the ethics of time tell us. That was 1993, but nothing happen on the ground, the deterioration and shrinking of natural resources continues environmental education and program still on the sideline.

There is also an international consensus that we are facing multiple crises in the areas of environment and development deforestation, loss of biodiversity, escalating poverty, desertification and depletion of the ozone layer, and so on (United Nations, 1992; Singh and Amaratimga, 1994).

Southeast Asian countries are occupying only 3% of total world surface and yet we nurture the 20% of the world biodiversity in the planet. Southeast Asian population is now 0.67 billion which is 10% from the total of 6.7 billion populations in the planet. Of the 0.67 billion Asian population 60% of those are residents in the rural areas, and 80% of their income are generated from the “natural capital” or the ecological services provided by our natural resources with rich biodiversity. However our region is facing a distinct pressure on rapidly growing population, urbanization and high vulnerability to the impacts of climate change because of its agrarian landscape. The coming dilemma is how to meet the demand of ever burgeoning population growth against the ever shrinking natural resources (ARCBC, 2008).

As early as 2020, residents of Asia's megacities will be at great risk of river and coastal flooding, Asians can expect extensive species loss. The document further says recent research has heightened concern that the poor and the elderly will suffer most from climate change; that hunger and disease will be more common; that droughts, floods and heat waves will afflict the world's poorest regions; and that more animal and plant species will vanish. The potential impact of global warming is "so severe and so sweeping that only urgent, global action will do," warned by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, 2007. This will be a second and might be the last warning and at this times a tone of irreversibility of destruction and collapse of natural resources which our economy depends on are so optimistic. The collapse of the natural resources means collapse of the society.

Environmental education to teach the children on the proper natural resources is just made as sideline while Southeast Asian natural resources are supporting the 80% of the rural people, shape the cultural values and preserve the future of the Southeast Asian community. As Bruntland commission defines development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987:43). Formal and non-formal education is expected to play a critical role in facilitating our transition towards sustainable societies (UNCED, 1992).

I think it’s not yet late the community of Southeast Asian should take a drastic move to institutionalize “Environmental Science Education” as curriculum in every education system. A curriculum which does not sideline the focus of environmental education but putting it as the center for ecological literacy and capacity building of school children, out-of-school youths, adults and the community of Asian, as these children will enjoy or suffer the castigation of the environment in the very near future if not managed properly and cater the needs of the next generation.

The main Objective is Institutionalizing “Environmental Science Education” as curriculum for basic education for elementary and secondary students’ age (6-18) with a clear purpose;

1. Reconnecting the Asian school children and out-of-school youths and adults and the community to their immediate environment;
2. Connecting the school and community towards a concerted effort to benefit the mutual learning process of understanding the vital role of natural resources for socio-economic survival of the society.
3. Cultivating the local resources for self-sufficiency and sustainability.

Teachers, educators, education planners, curriculum planners, human resources development planners and capacity building experts are requested to give their views and comments, suggestions and feedbacks.

Ito ang tatak ng isang Aranzan, laging nag-aalab ang puso sa panalangin kaisa ng Mahal na Birhen ng Aranzazu. Sa katunayan 40 taon na ang ating institusyon......tatagal ka pa ba? Ano'ng sikreto mo? Ano ang baon mo para maging matatag sa gitna ng "tinikan"?

Naniniwala ako na ang tunay na pundasyon ng isang institusyon ay ang mga taong bumubuo nito. Ang mga gusali at batong naitatag ay bunga lamang ng pagsusumikap ng mga tao na ginampanan nang buong katapatan ang kanilang mga gawain sa mahabang panahon ng paglilingkod. Sa aking mga kasama sa paaralang ito, para sa inyo rin ang karangalang ito sapagkat sa labinlimang taong ipinaglingkod ko dito ay kayo ang naging kasama ko sa pagtupad ng aking tungkulin. Maraming salamat po, lalo na doon sa mga nauna talaga sa paaralang ito noong ito ay nagsisimula pa lamang. Alam natin kung gaano kahirap ang bawat pagsisimula. Naalala ko pa kung paano ako nagsimula dito bilang “General Clerk”; multi-tasking talaga ako noon—sa pagiging typing and filing clerk, nars, maintenance, in-charge of typing sa isang lumang Olympia typewriter, sometimes editing gamit ang correction fluid, printing sa isang makalumang mimeographing machine, mano-manong collating of test papers, checking of computation of grades; nagturo din ako sa Grade 2 noon; naging kontrobersyal na Finance officer din ako for 1 school year para mag trouble shoot lang; hanggang sa maging full time Registrar. Hindi ako namili ng trabaho o posisyon, basta kinailangan at pinagkatiwala sa akin, ginagampanan ko ng buong puso. Pagiging Principal at Director lang ang hindi ipinagkatiwala sa akin. Masaya ako sa mga ginampanan kong gawain ngunit nais ko pa muling mabigyan ng pagkakataong magturo sa hayskul ng Values Ed , ang pinakamahirap na subject sa paaralang ito.

Sa mga manggagawa ng paaralang ito na nagtiis sa simpleng buhay ng isang “Aranzan”; maliit lang ang suweldo, walang food allowance noon , wala ring transportation allowance pero nagpakita ng dedikasyon, may sikreto kayo. Una, ay ang paniniwala na sa inyong pagiging guro ay ginagampanan ninyo ang kalooban ng Diyos at pangalawa, dahil naging masaya ang samahan ninyo noon. 40 taon sa liwanag ng katotohanan ang NSDAPS at patuloy ang pag-unlad...Muli, maraming salamat sa inyo dahil bahagi pa rin kayo ng naging pundasyon ng paaralang ito. Kung wala kayo noon, paano kami ngayon? At ipahintulot ninyo na banggitin ko ang isang tao na masasabi kong dugong Aranzan na talaga. Naging mag-aaral siya dito at kabilang sa unang grupo na nagtapos dito ng Kindergarten, si Gng. Adelaida San Juan-Manansala. Mukhang kinder pa rin di ba? Kahit maliit, naging matatag yan dahil guro siya at naniwala siya sa biyaya ng Diyos na gumabay sa kanya.

Sa lahat ng mga kasama ko sa paaralang ito, may sikreto ang pag-unlad: We should develop good habits. Lima lang ang ibabahagi ko:
P-- Punctuality – be on time for every task. He who is punctual does the will of God.
O—Be organized. It is a skill borne out of being consistent all the time.
S-- Good study habits – sa mga empleyado, mga guro at mag-aaral kailangan ito. Huwag tumigil sa pagbabasa at paghahasa ng karunungan para maging maunlad tayo sa mga makabagong kaalaman.
H-- Good health habits – ang kalusugan ay isang kayamanan; avoid vices, have good sleeping habits, and good eating habits
S-- Sound spiritual habits – good prayer and sacramental life. This is the integrating factor in a person and this is how a true Aranzan makes a difference.
Lastly, let us keep our gaze at our Lady of Aranzazu because she has the unfading light which directs us to her Son, Jesus.
